The public campaign launched on Monday 14th July with four information stands held in Worcester, Redditch, Kidderminster and Evesham, this backed up with a number of press articles (including coverage in the Nursing Standard), social media messaging and campaign materials distributed to organisations across the county. The second half of the campaign, for care/residential home staff and hospital ward staff will launch at the beginning of October, with the launch of an education pack to offer useful information in helping keep their patients/residents hydrated.
Malnutrition and dehydration greatly increase an individual's vulnerability to illness, clinical complications and death (BAPEN 2012c). Dehydration is one of the risk factors for falls in older people and is associated with a number of adverse effects including pressure ulcers and cognitive impairment (Water UK 2005). Inadequate hydration is one of the main causes of acute kidney injury (AKI) which affects around one in five people admitted to hospital as an emergency and many elderly patients (NHS Kidney Care 2012). Work done by NHS Kidney Care has found that nearly a third of AKI cases are avoidable.
