Understanding our population

As a CCG our decisions are based on the use of patient and public insight, experience and involvement (PPIEI) to identify, explore and fully understand the causes, consequences, impact and interdependencies of health inequalities and health inequities, which in turn inform the decisions we make. 

While this is something we have previously achieved, it is not been something that has necessarily been undertaken systematically nor with a documented strategic approach to guide our commissioners through the process. 

In 2016 we published our strategic approach to address that gap and sets out how we wish to achieve this on a more consistent and effective basis moving forward.

The CCG works closely with Worcestershire Public Health to understand our populations demographics. See their website for more information. 

We monitor who takes part in our engagement activities so that we can target and improve our approach. When joining our membership scheme, we ask for demographic details. We also ask our survey respondents for demographic details to help with analysis and targeting further work.


Our Worcester Involvement Network is open to all of the population of Worcestershire. We regularly monitor and review its membership to understand the demographic breakdown of the community we regularly engage with. The examples below are samples taken in January 2020:

Advancing Equality

As a CCG we produce an Equality and Inclusion Strategy

The CCG works with partners, including the voluntary and community sector, to enhance our engagement especially with traditionally seldom heard groups. Examples of this include:

  • Worcestershire Association of Carers host the STP wide Cares Advisory Group
  • Maternity Voices Partnership with local mum's 
  • Local School partnership for Youth Takeover Day

Our engagement activity is a key part of the Equality Delivery System. The Equality Delivery System requires NHS organisations to engage with their local populations and their workforce to determine performance through a grading process. The assessment process has enabled us to identify gaps in our equality performance and make plans for improvement. Our Lay Member for Patient and Public Involvement and our supporting Patient and Public Involvement Lay Members are involved in this process.
