Local health bosses are encouraging people to talk openly about dying, death and bereavement to make sure their end of life wishes are met.

NHS Redditch and Bromsgrove Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is supporting Dying Matters Awareness Week, a national campaign organised by Dying Matters, which takes place from the 8 - 14 May.

The theme of this year’s Dying Matters Awareness Week is ‘What can you do? This aims to get people more active in planning for dying and death and helping friends, family or the wider community to support those who may need it in times of grief and bereavement.
.
There are a few simple steps that can be taken to prepare for end of life and these are:
  • Write your will
  • If you need to, make financial plans to ensure those close to you are protected
  • Plan for future care and support
  • Record your funeral wishes
  • Register as an organ or tissue donor, and share this decision with loved ones

Research commissioned by Dying Matters shows that only 30% of people have let someone know their funeral plans, only 35% of people have written a will and fewer than 10% of people have written down their wishes or preferences about the care they would want.

Dr Richard Davies, Chair and Clinical Lead for NHS Redditch and Bromsgrove CCG said: “We’re proud to be supporting Dying Matters Awareness Week, as it’s really important that people express their end of life wishes to their friends, family and loved ones.

“Dying and death isn’t easy to talk about, but hopefully Dying Matters Awareness Week will give people the confidence they need to make sure arrangements are in place.”
